Tom has lived in Savannah for 40 years. He is a state approved instructor in the fields of Insurance and Real Estate. He is the former owner of Oglethorpe Realty and Construction Co, and has been a school teacher, having taught in Sydney, Australia, as well as Savannah. Tom is married and has two daughters. His wife is a former teacher who taught students with learning disabilities. Tom has been active in civic affairs for many years. His past activities include:

Presently Tom serves on the Board of Directors of the Small Business Chamber. For 28 years Tom has been Chairman of "Kids Helping Kids", which has resulted in over 300,000 toys being collected for needy children in the Savannah area and overseas. He serves on the Business Advisory Council of Quantum Inc/Coastal Center of Developmental Services. He is a member of the Savannah Triathlon Team. Tom has participated in many Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce functions. Because of his efforts on behalf of the small business community he received the year 2000 "Small Business Champion Award". In 2009 he was the recipient of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce "Helen Head Small Business Advocate Award". As a result of his community involvement, Tom was chosen to run the Olympic Torch in Savannah for the Atlanta Summer games and in Jacksonville for the Salt Lake City Winter Games.
